In response to an influx of new plant proposals, which could open the biggest building boom since the 1970s, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is expanding. Within two years, the NRC could receive 29 application for new reactors in 20 states. Bill Borchardt, director of the new NRC office called the Office of New Reactors said that the new office has 400 employees and will grow to 480 to handle the new applications. Over the next few years, the NRC anticipates requests for five different types of new reactors. Unlike the 1970s, the new designs will be virtually identical for each plant type and will not vary between utilities.
